BlogJet 1.6 *will* support link titles

UPDATE (2005/12/02):  Read the first comment by Dmitry :-)

I checked the BlogJet blog today and I saw that Dmitry Chestnykh has posted about the advanced insert link window in v1.6.  I posted a feature request (actually added to an existing request for link titles) last week or so and I’m just thrilled to see that Dmitry is including this functionality in the 1.6 release (not saying that it was my request which did anything).   Adding link titles manually takes a bit of time, so this will definitely help speed that up and has put a halt to my search for an alternative blogging client that would support link titles

Oh… he also moved hosts, so all of the forum posts are gone and the feed URL has changed.   The feed for the BlogJet blog is now at http://blogjet.org/blog/feed/

There are also some other cool features he has blogged about lately like a Flickr plug-in and pinging default URLs.  Also, don’t forget to get the latest version of the BlogJetThis Firefox extension that will work with Firefox 1.5.

The Mobile Minute 121

I had some lovely post-Thanksgiving food poisoning and now I’ve picked up the flu (and who know’s what else) – nothing like feeling completely miserable when you have a lot of work to do (and yes, I’m still blogging and working because it helps keep my mind off of how craptacular I feel, although TMM may not be daily this week).

Always wanted to be a Transformer?  Check out this piece on BoingBoing.  For just under US$4000, you can have a costume that can transform while you wear it.   (via Engadget)

 Sweet.

Mailbox sizing

Interesting / fun piece over at secretGeek about mailbox size limits

Some thoughts:

1) 1GB of storage for a corporate e-mail account?!? Pretty generous, IMO. Just where does this individual work, and how many people are employed there?

2) If you have 1GB of space and you can’t keep things pruned, you’ve got issues, bub.

3) I get less than 100MB of space*. IIRC:  when I hit *that* number, I get warnings.  When hit a number a bit over 100MB, I am prevented from sending e-mail.  When I hit ~200MB, my mailbox starts rejecting inbound mail.    while I would like to see my limit bumped to 100MB (or maybe a little more), I think I deal with it pretty well.  I archive regularly, and have several PSTs (which, admittedly, can be a pain to tote around…and they're just more line items on my backup plan).

How much utter crap must one have to clog 1GB?!?  Good Grief.

*I know that the initial number I get warnings at is 85MB.  The other numbers I mentioned are SWAG, but I think that they are close – I haven’t experienced them firsthand because I actively archive. My employer has more than 3700 employees [mailboxes] worldwide, hence consideration for the amount of storage allotted to each of us.

Lots of goodies in this issue of TMM; make sure to check out the dev section.  Happy Thanksgiving to my US readers; hopefully most of you won’t have too much winter weather to deal with.  Up here in northeast Ohio (we’re visiting family) we have our first taste of winter with several inches of snow to deal with. :-)

Differencing .sln and .xxproj files
PostedTuesday, November 22, 2005 1:16 PM by Nino

Why can I not diff (compare) a solution or project file in Visual Studio by right-clicking on the file in the Solution Explorer and selecting ‘Compare’? The only way, AFAIK, to perform a diff in the IDE is (after selecting the file in the Solution Explorer) to do File > Source Control > Compare.

I wonder why that is…    (and feel free to call me lazy for wanting to leverage the context menu)

Weblog usability @ nino.net
Filed under:
PostedSunday, November 20, 2005 9:51 PM by Nino

Joel Spolsky (whom I seem to have a rather mixed opinion about as of late) blogs about a redesign on his site.  In that post, he throws out a link to Jakob Nielsen’s post on Weblog Usability.  I read Jakob’s post, and guess what?  My blog is a sinner in the church of usability (and I knew some of this before I read Jakob’s post).

It is time to repent. Addressing each of Jakob’s points:

1. No Author Biographies
Fixed. I now have an About Me article that is linked off of my blog’s home page.

2. No Author Photo
Fixed.  Not the best photo (and yes, I *am* smiling); I’ll have a better one up soon.

3. Nondescript Posting Titles
This is a work-in-progress item. For the most part, I *think* I do pretty good on this one.  The one area where I am pondering change is with The Mobile Minute.  Long-time readers will recall that for a short while I had named two or three things in the subject line, then I moved away from it because I found it too tedious (er, I got lazy). I’m not certain how to approach this ….suggestions?

4. Links Don’t Say Where They Go
I’m certain guilty of this one; moving forward, all links will have link titles (now I just need to figure out how to more easily insert them via BlogJet – as opposed to hand-editing the HTML). I’ll also work on making the link text more descriptive.

5. Classic Hits are Buried
I don’t have any “classic hits”…yet, although I have referenced past editions of TMM.

6. The Calendar is the Only Navigation
As Jakob suggests, I do categorize my posts, and am usually pretty conservative with the categorizations.  From this point forward my ‘The Mobile Minute’ posts will *only* be categorized as ‘The Mobile Minute’.  Otherwise, I think I’m pretty good to go here (be sure to read #8 below).

7. Irregular Publishing Frequency
Guilty as charged (thank you, sir. may I have another?!?).  The Mobile Minute (TMM) started out as a daily, although the regularity of that depended on how busy I was with work (i.e. was I doing 5x16 or 4x10).  So what do I do here?  I keep TMM daily, but smaller (i.e. less links).

8. Mixing Topics
Ah yes, again, very guilty. What to do about it? Good question.  I’ve not quite decided on that myself.  For the most part, my weblog posts focus on Microsoft’s mobile platform and development for said platform. I do have other posts that are not mobility (or even development) related, so should I nix the categories for those posts and move all non-development, non-mobility posts to a new blog?  I’ve thought about that too.  Since I have full control of this instance of Community Server, creating a new weblog is not an issue.  Suggestions?

9. Forgetting That You Write For Your Future Boss
I do not think that I write much flame-bait; however, I’ve not really demonstrated much of anything here.  I’ve been too damned concerned about not offending anyone that I write nothing of substance.  Need to stop that. I look at like this, as long as I can back up my writing with facts, I’m fine.  *Someone* wil be offended, or deem my view incorrect..a fact of life. Let’s just agree to disagree (but if I can persuade you to my viewpoint, all the better).

10. Having a Domain Name Owned by a Weblog Service
Not a problem.

Please leave your suggestions for #3 and #8.  Thanks!   ...and oh yeah, I need a new skin for my blog - something with some panache.
