Insight into the Task Manager

Jeff Atwood has a great piece on the Task Manager where he explains each section of information on it and how it is valuable / can be used and what columns you should view and such.  I'd recommend giving it a read, you might learn a thing or two  (I did, and I thought I was very well versed in the TM).

..and this one is mostly dev stuff (and darn good stuff, too).

Software / Hardware

  • Pocket PC FAQ has a nice matrix listing new application names in WM 5.0One correction to note: They have the browser listed as “Internet Explorer”.   It used to be called “pocket Internet Explorer”  and is now called “Internet Explorer Mobile”.

Lots of device news in this edition (actually this edition will be nearly all device news), particularly since I haven’t posted all week as I’ve been fighting off the flu and a round of bronchitis.  I still feel pretty crappity, but I need to give up on that taking it easy thing so I can get some work done (not like I have pneumonia – although that didn’t stop me from working, either). Time to man up.

I didn't go, but I thought I'd relay some blog posts that I liked from some attendees:

Casey Chesnut's wrap-up

I really enjoyed Mike Wood's PDC posts here.   Don't confuse him with the other one.

yeah..that's about it.

I've gotten some IM's today from people who have taken a liking to my current South Park -styled avatar, so I thought I'd blog about it.

1) go to http://spstudio.elena.hosting-friends.de/spstudio.html and build yourself an avatar
2) take a screen capture
3) trim out the avatar and save as a 96x96 pixel image (I saved as .png)
4) select your new image as your MSN IM avatar.

for the curious, here's my current one:

it pretty much looks like me.. ya think?

Windows Mobile 5.0 video review
Filed under:
PostedTuesday, September 13, 2005 8:21 AM by Nino

This has been around a while, but I was hesitant to post it because it was done using a, er, non-authorized version of Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone. Now that WM5.0 is not such a secret, I have changed my mind[1].  Give it a whirl

IRS temporarily boosts mileage rate
Filed under:

I'm a few days late on this one, but thought I'd share the good news:
Effective September 1, 2005, the IRS has raised the mileage rate from $0.405/mile to $0.485/mile for the remainder of 2005. Of course, no guarantee that your employer will follow along...

It will be interesting to see what they set the 2006 rate at when they re-evaluate at the end of the year.

Microsoft bribing the blogosphere?
PostedTuesday, September 06, 2005 5:14 PM by Nino

reminder: this post is an opinion (check the category); that means that these are my thoughts. This opinion is, in no way, representative of the thoughts of my employer, my friends, or even my spouse (eventhough she does actually read my blog).

msmobiles.com has published this piece about Microsoft “influencing” the blogosphere.  What’s the issue?  Microsoft loaned Peter Rojas, editor-in-chief of Engadget, a HTC Universal device for two weeks. Peter subsequently wrote a FAQ / very basic review and posted several photos of the device.

So why does it matter? Regarding the HTC Universal, Microsoft is only part of the equation. In my opinion, more people care about the hardware than the software of this device.  Guess who makes the hardware?  HTC. Gosh, that’s not Microsoft, is it?  Plenty has been written about Windows Mobile 5.0 by now, and what Peter wrote did not even go in-depth on WM5.0.  Certainly Microsoft would like to get the word out on their platform, it’s good stuff, but I think that calling this action a bribe is a little much.

Besides, usually when you bribe someone, they usually write a rather glowing review (and omit any negative comments). I do not see that here. In fact, Peter touched on some things that weren’t so good, or needed improvement.  As I see it, the answers to the FAQ were 99% factual; the 1% I see as subjective content lies in statements like ‘WiFi is way, way better on the Universal’.

There have been a number of articles on the HTC Universal to-date, and this one will only serve to further promote it. So who wins?

Engadget – they featured a forthcoming ‘hot’ device.  They have, I’m guessing, gained a few new readers and have, again, proved to their existing readers that they can get early access to new hardware -this will keep those readers coming back.
Microsoft – Readers see cool hardware running their new mobile OS and want to find out more about it. They also may be interested to find other devices running the OS
HTC – Readers see cool hardware made by this OEM and are not only excited about purchasing it, but also interested in what else they have to offer

msmobiles.com writes:
If Microsoft loans new fantastic, yet unreleased, mobile phone to editor in chief of certain news website, but at the same time it denies the same favor to all other news websites, and if this website then publishes positive stories about this phone, then can it be called "bribe"?

Here’s what I think:
msmobiles.com was wanted to review the device and was snubbed by Microsoft and is taking issue with the fact that Engadget was loaned a device. Maybe I’m wrong. I am making a statement of opinion, not fact.  Am I ‘anti-msmobiles.com’?  No. If I was I would not link to them so frequently from my blog. They have, for the most part, good information.  I do think; however, that sometimes they can be a bit sensationalist[1] in their reporting. Their choice.  You and I, gentle reader, can choose to pay attention or not. Choice – ain’t it great?   Is this a case of Microsoft influencing the blogosphere?  I do not think so.

-Nino

[1] and yeah.. the title of this post was intentionally sensationalist (IMO)

Nothing like a long weekend ….to get some work done. :-)   Unfortunately, I didn’t get it all done, those pesky ‘personal committments’ kept getting in the way.  I was working on a PPC version of a mobile SharePoint app that I had originally written for Smartphone, as some folks asked about using it in a demo (and I still owe Mike a Smartphone CAB). It’s coming along, but, as I said, not quite there yet.  And, of course, I want to re-write it when I get this version done this week, because I see a much better way to do some things. Hmm.. should be a decent piece of intellectual property to submit to aKM.  This has gotten a bit lengthy, so I’ll chat about ACA Mobile in another post.

Lots of hardware news this time… oh yeah!

Sold my old WinCE / PPC devices ..

I had a Philips Velo 500 and an HP iPAQ h3650 lying around and decided that I'd be better off with some cash (sadly, I know..), so I went to UsedHandhelds.com and inquired about selling my devices to them.  I promptly received an e-mail from Wayne who gave me an estimate.  Once I returned from vacation, I shipped them off to Iowa, and I received a check shortly thereafter.  Easy, painless.  Give UsedHandhelds.com a look if you are interested in buying or selling...

"We were coming in from a parking deck at Tulane Medical Center, and a guy in a white shirt started firing at us," Curiel said. "The National Guard (troops), wearing flak jackets, tried to get a bead on this guy. ”

“Evacuations by boat were halted after armed looters threatened medics, and overturned one of their boats.”

This is a horrible situation and people are under extreme duress, but what the *** is with this crap?  Threatening medics?
Good grief, people!  This makes me so sad to see.  Thank goodness it was just a few isolated incidents.
