DUI checkpoints - Should you be informed?
Friday, April 20, 2007 11:22 PM
My wife was reading the local paper, The Cincinnati Enquirer , online tonight and noticed that it announced the [generic] location of a DUI checkpoint. Article here . I'm trying to fathom as to the logic behind this. To help the drunkards know where to avoid? To let people know that there may be a traffic issue on the noted road? I thought that this was supposed...

Doug Reilly - you will be missed
Monday, January 01, 2007 9:20 PM
Catching up on blogs I just saw Ryan's post about fellow MVP Doug Reilly. Doug lost his battle with cancer on December 23 (Here's Jean's post) . Scott Watermasysk posts , too. As both Scott and Ryan noted, Doug was a great guy. Admittedly, I didn't know him well (mostly virtually), but I can say that he was one of the nicest, most helpful guys out there. Why...

Where's Nino?
Sunday, October 22, 2006 11:21 PM
It's been a while since I've blogged (and blogged regularly at that) ; where have I been? I'll give you one guess. Starts with "w" and ends with "k". Did you guess "work"? Well good for you; you are correct. For the last three (more?) months, we've been putting in some serious hours driving hard towards an early December milestone. Lots of work to do, functional...

RIP: Steve Irwin (aka 'Crocodile Hunter')
Monday, September 04, 2006 5:37 PM
From http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14663786/ : CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin died doing what he loved best, getting too close to one of the dangerous animals he dedicated his life to protecting with an irrepressible, effervescent personality that propelled him to global fame as television’s “Crocodile Hunter.” The 44-year-old Irwin’s heart...

A few observations...
Monday, July 17, 2006 12:35 PM
UA few observations (er, rambling rantings ).. 14+ hour work days are not conducive to regular blogging or newsgroup monitoring IE7 (b3) is swell. I'm now using it for most of my browsing instead of Firefox. Too bad its extensibility is not to the level of Firefox (or the same level of ease). Rational ClearCase is evil. Oh, the ClearCase client for VS2005 behaves...

A good week...
Wednesday, April 12, 2006 3:05 AM
Some of my readers my wonder where I’ve been the last week or two as there has been no TMM and I have, as they say, “gone ghost”. Well, gentle readers, between working on some internal Avanade stuff, tending to some personal matters, and being in training in Chicago last week, I’ve been fairly busy. Last week though, outside of a great deal of difficulty in getting...

Speaking at Day of .NET
Wednesday, April 05, 2006 2:51 PM
The fine folks putting together Day of .NET (Ann Arbor, MI May 13, 2006) have selected two [out of five] of the abstracts that I submitted. My sessions are: Life with LUA: Developing for Fun and Fortune as a Non-Admin Abstract: As developers, we’ve been hearing that we should not run with administrative priviledges on our computers, but how do you develop software...

Good DevCare session this past Friday
Tuesday, March 21, 2006 2:39 AM
Friday's DevCare session went pretty well. Drew did a cool 'Intro to Platform Builder' and put the Windows CE image he built onto his GumStix . My 'Native/Managed Dev w/ VS2005' went pretty well and Josh did a good session on 'Connecting Mobile Applications' (in which he was kind enough to let me interject a few times). I just wanted to thank Drew and Josh for...

A CS2 trust error
Friday, March 17, 2006 3:07 AM
So, my CS 2.0 setup is running just fine for the last four days and then I hit it from my hotel in Southfield tonight and <gasp> it’s broken! I was presented with this: GAH!!!! Two things are evident to me: 1) I was stoooopid and left custom errors as “Off” and 2) It’s trying to override the trust level (why didn’t this break before? I saw this in my dev...

CS2 Upgrade - the details
Wednesday, March 15, 2006 2:01 AM
So I’ve upgraded to Community Server 2.0 – here’s my story: Why? I was looking for some issues (defects) to be addressed, podcasting support, and the redesigned control panel and management tools. I was also looking for .NET 2.0 support. How? First, I did an upgrade in my dev environment. 1) I downloaded Community Server 2.0 (Web Install) – ASP.NET 2.0 and unpacked...

Moving around
Sunday, March 05, 2006 8:00 PM
FYI: Over the next day or so I'm going to be moving web hosts (and of course, DNS records), so things might be a little whacked over the next forty-eight hours. UPDATE (20060307:0140): Looks like everything is in place. So, um.. if you're reading this.. yeah. I'm now running my CS 1.1 install on SQL Server 2005. I may try to upgrade to CS 2.0 by the weekend,...

The Need for Hard-Reset Buttons (aka How Spb Pocket Plus killed my device)
Friday, December 30, 2005 7:46 PM
In response to my earlier post on How to hard-reset your HTC Wizard , some folks wrote me to ask why, if they can use the ‘Clear Storage’ method of performing a hard-reset, would they ever consider contorting their fingers and then make sure they hit the right buttons in the correct order in a sort of Merlin * -esque game. The answer, gentle reader, is simple...
