[Book] How to Lie with Statistics
I just finished How to Lie with Statistics
by Darrell Huff. I think that this is a great book (excellent illustrations by Irving Geis) that was an enjoyable read. Although the book was published in 1954, it is still pertinent today (more so, I would argue). A great reminder of how people are able to lie with valid numbers, Huff takes the reader through several of the common vehicles used by those wishing to deceive and introduces the reader to some very basic statistics concepts (a refresher to some).
I found this book to be a quick and enjoyable read (142 pages, interspersed with illustrations) - this would be a great book to read during lunch, or while on commuting on the Metro ([sigh] I actually miss the Metro). I also learned a new word that Huff seemed to have a penchant for using: chicanery.
Check it out… (oh, and I’ve added a “Books” category)
