w00t!   I picked up a new 40GB iPod today..  I, of course, did not read the instructions, but instead took it out of the box and started playing with it.  I picked up the interface like that *snaps fingers*.   The click-wheel is so darn intuitive!

The weather in DC is a slightly less humid today, which was nice for my commute to work. I'm still getting acclimated to the high the humidity(IMO) at say, 6:30AM when I'm on my way to the Metro.. ugh. I have some additional anecdotes to blog about later.

NOM
PostedFriday, July 23, 2004 9:36 PM by Nino

Last Saturday (7/17), I got a call confirming (got the "we may be.." email the day before) that my team (the mobile team) would be moving down to DC (from NJ) to join the rest of the team (server-side Java; ewww, gross! :P) until we complete R1.  Well, having settled into my space at the office in NJ, I left my mouse, security cable, and ethernet cable there expecting to return on the following Monday.

In deciding to pick up a new mouse, I selected a Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse.  After using it for a week, I'm pretty happy with it.  Of course, I miss the two extra buttons on my IntelliMouse Optical (I used those for Forward/Back in IE/Maxthon), but I've adjusted (and it takes up just that much less space in my bag).

I have an Intellimouse Optical on my home computer, and the first time I used when I got home this week it felt like it was made of lead (compared to the very light Notebook Optical Mouse [NOM]).  My only reservation about the NOM is that it would be too small for my hands; nope, it settles in nicely under my fingers.

Overall, I give the NOM a thumbs-up.

Employee Review advice
Filed under:

John Porcaro has some, IMO, great advice on completing your annual review.   My colleagues and I are completing these now, too.

Last year was the first year that that I had to do one of these like this (none of my prior employers ever did anything this thoroughly), and I was in the "Damn it, I have to write about myself. I hate writing about myself" mode.  Subsequently, I wrote not more than a paragraph for each section as I just wanted to get the thing off of my plate.   20/20 hindsight reveals that that wasn't the best thing I could have done.

After going through the process last year, I have a much better perspective on the importance of the ARF (annual review form) in the performance review process.  This year's will be more substantive. 'nuff said.

Firefox thoughts..
PostedFriday, July 23, 2004 5:41 PM by Nino

MikeWo took a peek at Firefox and has posted his thoughts.  I used to use Firefox now and then, primarily for Googling [Google Groups]  (I found it extremely wonderful to open new tabs and see the threads I had opened, as opposed to having to Alt-Tab to a new IE window).

I concur with Mike that the toolbars need some work.  I have my IE toolbars set to No text labels and Small icons; I attempted to mimic this in Firefox, but I find that the toolbars are still too tall.  IE accommodates my greed for screen real estate; I wish Firefox would.

There are many, many nifty extensions and add-ins (the search engines add-ins rock), and quite frankly, the level of trust I place in these is much higher than with those for IE.

Download manager: IE needs this.  Options dialog: I think my wife could get through this herself without asking me questions (and it's prettier than IE's).

And lastly, the tabs; the wonderful, addictive tabs.  Mike doesn't think that tabs aren't that much of an improvement over Alt-Tabbing through your IE windows; I'll agree to a point (Ctrl-Tab or Alt-Tab, pick one).  Here's one reason I'm hooked on tabs: I'm a neat freak.  Too many IE windows stacking up makes me twitchy (just like a cluttered desktop and non-emptied Recycle Bin).  Using tabs provides, IMO, a nicely organized way to present all your browser 'windows'.

With all that said, I've stopped using Firefox.  Why?  Too many sites I visit (read: MSFT sites) do not display/function properly in Firefox*.  Example: http://support.microsoft.com   Open this site in IE and Firefox; looks fine. Now, click the Search the Knowledge Base link at the top (the one next to the books & magnifying glass icon).  What happens?  Firefox takes me to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx, and IE takes me to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;KBHOWTO   Yeah, that's useful. Bad Firefox, no cookie! (no pun intended)

At the risk of public embarassment (probably do me some good, hmm?), I'd love to know if there is some setting I missed that would let Firefox follow that link appropriately.

What do I use now?  Primarily Maxthon (fka MyIE2).  I didn't install / disabled all the wack add-ins that it ships with (they make me nervous, security-wise, so I'm running it in a rather 'vanilla' configuration.  Why Maxthon?  IE experience with tabs, it's that simple.  I also like how when using Ctrl-Tab to run through the open tabs it shows a list of them so that you can see the full page title (Firefox doesn't do this). Oh, and it's toolbars are accomodating to my screen real estate greed.

But hey, it all comes down to personal preference, now doesn't it?  Firefox is cool, but I prefer Maxthon and IE.

*Yeah, I know about the Open in IE extension for Firefox, but that defeats the purpose of switching browsers, eh?

my Dell took a small bath
Filed under:
PostedThursday, July 22, 2004 8:34 AM by Nino

I had a small accident in my hotel room last night; my Dell got wet.  I had an open liter of water on my desk (stupid, stupid, stupid!) next to my laptop, and I was working away when my phone rang.  When my brain instructed my arm to reach for the phone and bring it back to me, it forgot that the liter bottle was in the way.  Upon the collision of my arm with the bottle, some choice words came to mind (in Italian, interestingly enough) and I immediately powered down (and dropped my phone).

I soaked up the big puddle quickly, then got some tissues to insert vertically between the keys to get those droplets.  I then took out everything I could, PCMCIA dummy cards, battery, DVD (I would have pulled the hd, too, but I can't really have a screwdriver in my bag on the plane, eh?).  I turned it on it's side and said a small prayer.

I took this event as a sign that I should get some sleep, so I did a few more things online (using my Smartphone), then off to bed.  This morning, I waited until right before I was ready to leave to give it a try; I put the battery back in and hit the power button.  Yeah!!!  It powered up.  I shut it down again and left for work.  I got here and powered up again (on AC this time); all appears well as I've been working for several hours so far this morning.  <insert statement of thankfulness here>

a mess in Newark
Filed under:
PostedWednesday, July 14, 2004 9:18 PM by Nino

What a mess!  Half the flights out of Newark tonight are delayed by four hours or more, half (mine included) are cancelled.  Delta conveniently rescheduled me for a flight out Thursday morning at 0600.  UhOh!  That won't work.. I've got to fly out of Dayton to Chicago at 0900, and it takes way more than an hour to go from CVG to DAY.  :O

So.. I get back on the AirTrain to Terminal C (I'm currently in B) to see about a Continental flight to CVG..erg.. way overbooked ...ok, back on the AirTrain, head to Terminal A, see what American has to offer. Nothing. Damn. (and what a wait that was)  Look at depature board hopefully (yeah, right)....notice a flight to Columbus (CMH) (that I was told was booked earlier)..hmm.. AirTrain to Terminal C... get a "didn't I just see you leave here" look from one of the 'helpers' at the AirTrain in Terminal C.  Get back in the fairly short line at Continental..   get a seat on a flight to CMH that may leave late tonight.. so here I am at the gate hoping they don't cancel this one and comiserating with everyone else packed in here. ... ah, the joys of air travel ;->

sorry for taking that sixty seconds that you'll never get back, but I felt the urge to blog...  ;-)

update:  I ended up on the flight to CMH, and had my wife pick me up.  Given that we both had a long day, we stayed the night in Columbus, then she drove me to Dayton on thursday AM.
